Frequently Asked Questions

Are electric bikes legal?

Yes, electric bikes are legal if they meet the standard of 250W maximum power and are pedal assist. Throttle-only e-bikes may face restrictions in certain states. Always check local laws.

How far can an e-bike go on one charge?

Range depends on the model, terrain and assistance level. Most electric bicycles for sale offer a range of 40–100 km per charge, making them ideal for commuting and weekend rides. Tip – you can carry a second battery for longer rides.

Do I need a licence to ride an e-bike?

No licence is required for standard pedal-assist e-bikes with a power output of up to 250W. These are classified the same as bicycles. Always check local road rules before riding.

Can I ride an e-bike in the rain?

Yes, most e-bikes are water-resistant and safe to ride in wet conditions. However, avoid submerging components and always dry the bike after use.

What’s the difference between a commuter e-bike and an e-MTB?

Commuter e-bikes are designed mainly for city roads and urban paths and are efficient people movers, while e-MTBs are built for off-road durability and performance. Our e-bike range includes both.

Are electric bikes (e-bikes) legal to ride in NSW?

Absolutely. E-bikes that meet specific requirements are legal to ride in NSW on public roads and shared paths. The key is to ensure your e-bike is a 'pedalec' type, where the motor provides assistance only when you are pedalling.

What are the official rules for E-Bikes in NSW?

To be legally used on NSW roads, an e-bike must:

  • Have a motor that is 250 watts or less.
  • Be compliant with the European standard EN15194.
  • Have a motor that cuts off assistance once you reach a speed of 25 km/h.
  • Not have a throttle or accelerator that can be used without pedalling in excess of 6km/h.

All the E-Bikes we stock at Wollongong Bike Hub meet these NSW legal requirements. For more detailed information, we recommend visiting the official Transport for NSW website.

Do I need a license or registration for my E-Bike in Wollongong?

No, as long as your e-bike meets the legal 'pedalec' standards mentioned above, you do not need a license or registration to ride it in NSW. You are simply required to follow the same road rules as riders of standard bicycles, including wearing a helmet.

Can I test ride an E-Bike before I buy it?

Yes, we strongly encourage it! The best way to understand the benefits of an e-bike is to ride one. Visit us in-store and our friendly team will be happy to arrange a test ride for you on one of our demo models.
